Geochemistry: Tools for Effective Exploration and Development

Bypassed pay in developed fields and undiscovered reserves in mature basins are attractive, low-cost targets, and geochemistry can greatly improve the odds of finding them. Participants learn to read geochemical logs, map organic facies, identify petroleum systems and predict variations in oil quality and gas-oil ratio in conventional and unconventional plays.

Who should attend

Exploration and development geologists, geophysicists, geochemists, engineers, managers and technical staff, with no prior geochemistry knowledge required.

What participants will be able to do

  • Characterise exploration risk using organic facies and source data
  • Integrate geochemical, geological and engineering data to identify compartments
  • Assess fracture height and inter-well communication in unconventional reservoirs
  • Distinguish frac water from formation water in produced fluids

Topics covered

  • Geochemical logs
  • Organic facies mapping
  • Petroleum system identification
  • Oil quality prediction
  • Unconventional reservoir geochemistry
  • Production allocation
